4.Alternative dispute resolution

In the event of a consumer dispute, you may refer it to a consumer alternative dispute resolution (ADR) body under Lei n.º 144/2015, de 8 de setembro. Consumer dispute arbitration centres provide mediation and arbitration free of charge or at low cost.

For disputes involving amounts up to €5,000, if the consumer expressly chooses to refer the matter to an authorised consumer arbitration centre, the seller is bound to that arbitration (Article 14.º of Lei n.º 24/96, de 31 de julho, as amended by Lei n.º 63/2019, de 16 de agosto).

CNIACC — Centro Nacional de Informação e Arbitragem de Conflitos de Consumo

If you live in an area with a regional arbitration centre (for example, the Lisbon or Porto metropolitan areas), that centre may have jurisdiction. The complete list of ADR bodies and a tool to identify the appropriate body for your case are available from the Portuguese Consumer Portal (opens in a new tab).

If you live in another European Union country, the European Consumer Centre — Portugal (opens in a new tab) may help you find the competent body.

The European Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform was discontinued by the European Union on 20 July 2025 (Regulation (EU) 2024/3228) and can no longer be used.
